After the success of our musical ‘Annie’ in the Spring term we have continued to build on the fantastic strengths and talents of our Thamesmead students. In the Summer term we set up a Performing Arts Club which combines drama, music and dance and we have looked at songs and scenes from musicals such as Grease, Hairspray and The Greatest Showman. The club has been very well attended with students from all years working together to create performances which showcase their many skills. This has led us to our current endeavour which is a performance piece combining acrobatics, gymnastics, drama, singing and dance using the song ‘This is Me’ from The Greatest Showman.
The Performing Arts Club performed this for the whole school on the outside stage in 2 assemblies on the final day of term. It is a wonderful celebration of the students’ achievements and the performing arts at our school.
In the first week of July there was a fantastic buzz around the department as we ran our Performing Arts workshop week. Local group Stars Performing Arts organised for 3 fantastic teachers who currently work in the West End to come into school and run drama and dance workshops based around Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Wicked and The Greatest Showman. We also had MN Academy in to run an Acting for Screen workshop. All these workshops were hugely successful and the students had a great time. Both visiting groups run courses and summer schools and their websites are as follows: http://www.sheppertonstars.co.uk/
